12-Year-Old Alex Knoll Creates Ability App for People With Disabilities

At only 12 years of age, Alexander Knoll is already passing out business cards. Significantly more amazing, his title on those business cards is "CEO" – and rightly so. He is the creator of Ability App, an application designed to help people with disabilities navigate public places.

The imaginative and creative redhead is making something that resembles Yelp for clear navigation. The free application enables individuals with disabilities to explore open spaces by giving data about wheelchair slopes, impaired stopping, braille menus and more.

Alex, who lives in Post Falls, Idaho, concocted the thought several years prior in the wake of seeing a man in a wheelchair struggle to open a substantial entryway. "I thought about whether there's an application or a site that could've disclosed to him what stores around the territory had programmed entryways," Alex revealed to NBC News.

His idea and app is currently getting national consideration. Alex made it to Ellen DeGeneres' show a few weeks ago, where he broke into tears of joy when he met his legend. DeGeneres amazed him with a check from Shutterfly for $25,000. Alex trusts the cash will enable him to complete the application. Alex said, "I will act as better as possible, as quick as I can to complete it and get it out to the general population."

"I believe it's truly incredible," said Tara Miller, a woman helping Alex develop the app. Alex's parents jump at the chance to state their child is savvy past his years.

"You hear individuals say the term 'old soul,'" said Brian Knoll, Alex's dad. "I think Alex is an incredible instance of an old soul."

His mom, Anne, concurs.

"He puts other individuals in the first place, and I generally get broken down when I consider it."
