Faisal Ashraf, who is born with a physical disability and met an accident while riding a retrofitted bike, later on, decided to make a better design and stable retrofitted bike. Faisal joins hands with a design engineer Tigmanshu Bhatnagar which results to create the GWL 01 which is a bike for people with disabilities.
Faisal Ashraf loves to ride a motorbike, and he is riding a retrofitted bike for 11 years. Since he had a physical disability from birth, he had forcefully ridden a bike with side wheels because in India no company designs bikes for people with disabilities.
Faisla came across an accident where his side wheels got brokering off in 2016. Then he decided to quit that bike and even talked about this issue to Tigmanshu Bhatnagar, who was then guest faculty at the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT-D)’s department of design.
Tigmanshu is very dedicated to making technologies for people with disabilities before also he had made a device for people with spastic quadriplegia. According to Faisal, they came to know about the struggle and dangerous system people with disabilities use since they don't have many options.
Faisal said they decide to modify an old model of TVS the Apache RTR. It was a successful attempt. They gave the bike an amazing look and made it stable. when the bike was taking out on the road it got a lot of attention since its so good looking and safe.
Faisal and Tigmanshu knew that if they want to break into the auto market they had to come up with something that can be useful for people with disabilities and without disabilities. With this, they also kept a survey where the people with disabilities were given a ride on the old version of retrofitted bikes. The result was 91% of people with disabilities were not happy with it and wanted something new. Faisal added.
They even surveyed the GWL 01 among people of different disabilities. Faisal claims that feedback on this bike was much better people were like balance, control, comfort, and the looks are just perfect. It makes people with disabilities feel safe and even the brakes work properly.
As planned that they will launch the GWL01 in the market, both the founders have spent a lot of time on the aesthetics and industrial design. But this won't be possible now since Tigmanshu is currently doing his Ph.D. in designing for people with disabilities in a London university.
