The boy glided beneath the water like it was his home. With the grace of a dolphin it seemed that every stroke was like a part of him. He was one with the water. Everything was effortless as the blue waters flowed through his body with ease. It was a dream come true made possible by the good will of many around the world. Alongside the boy, is Winter the dolphin. Together they played with each other as little children would in a pool. Their journey sparks inspiration as much as the water was their playground. But that’s not all. The voyage began with these five words:
“Did you bring my flippers?”
The blonde haired boy gleefully asked his father as he sat on the bulky chair of the plane. He just found out that he was coming with his dad, mum and sister to Florida. He previously thought he was just going to send their dad off. Beside him was his little sister who also squealed with delight at the prospect of a family outing to a distant land. You could only imagine their anticipation and joy.
But there’s more to the story. Cieran Kelso does not have both of his legs. Diagnosed with meningitis at a young age he was constrained to prosthetics. The inspiration came when Cieran Kelso saw the movie about Winter, the dolphin with the prosthetic tail. He found a unique similarity in their condition that most happily ended with a story of hope. It is a story about a boy with no legs who swam with a dolphin who had no tail.
Their story is a very powerful story about kinship and possibility. It crosses vast swathes of oceans and it transcends the boundaries of what used to be the limits. It is a story about finding the little child in all of us that just marvels at all the things we can explore. But most of all, it is a story about love and freedom.
Today, make it a point to explore. Feel free to have a grasp of all the elements. Challenge the boundaries to discover the great world of hope and opportunity that await you. See the world for all the beauty that it possesses equally among all its creatures. You have the power to discover. You have the power to choose. Most of all, you have the power of love.
