With today’s ever advancing technology and this generation’s creativity and innovativeness, anything is just possible. And what’s even more exciting is how people use technology to help out those who need it. Just like how BMW is giving wheelchairs the upper hand.
Recently, the world renowned German engine, motorcycle and automobile manufacturing company, BMW, announced their plans of creating or building wheelchairs that feature an incredibly advanced braking and steering system. The company, which was founded in 1916, is distinguished for selling one of the best luxury cars on the planet. Headquartered in Munich, BMW is also known for owning and producing mini cars.
BMW, also known as BMW AG or Bayerische Motoren Werke Aktiengesellschaft, stated in a report that the wheelchairs will be built specially for the US Paralympics Track and Field team for a competition that will be held in Rio in 2016. The German carmaker’s US branch has been partnering with Team USA and is currently working on these sports wheelchair. The development of the device will be overseen and 237b supervised by Designworks. Designworks, which is based in Newbury Park, California, is a BMW Group owned subsidiary and the creative or design consultancy of the company.
Trudy Hardy, the Marketing Vice President of BMW in North America, stated that the company made a commitment to helping and supporting the advancement of athletic performance as they partnered with Team USA. They will make it possible by using technology transfer initiatives wherein the equipment and training needs of the athletes will be addressed. Mr. Hardy further stated that the sports wheelchair the company is going to produce and release will be a device known not only for its uniqueness but for its capability to solve bigger or greater mobility challenges experienced or encountered by Paralympic athletes.
The sports wheelchairs that are to be manufactured will be devices that will influence the blueprint of the next generation of conventional wheelchairs. The developments and improvements on its design will be challenging the designers and makers or creators of standard mobility equipment.
This new wheelchair will be made out of composite and lightweight materials which include carbon fiber. The sports chair will also be based on a completely re-imagined framework or structure. It will also be tested if it is aerodynamically efficient. In addition to that, this special sports chair will feature remarkably advanced braking and steering systems.
According to BMW, the sports wheelchairs are scheduled to be released and delivered to Team USA early next year. The company and the team are looking forward to marvelous and outstanding outcomes.
