Colorado veterans with disabilities could expect to gain access to some new technology this year, courtesy of the Colorado School of Mines and a non-profit organization.
According to reports, the Colorado School of Mines has just received a $50,000 donation from the non-profit organization Quality of Life Plus (QL+) to work on adaptive equipment that will improve the quality of life for veterans with reduced mobility. The funding was given to help Mines students create assistive devices and technologies for veterans with disabilities.
The Colorado School of Mines is just one of the seven universities with whom QL+ is partnering to produce assistive devices for people with reduced mobility. The non-profit QL+ has decided to select the university as a technology partner because of the university’s impressive engineering programs and passionate students.
What to expect from the funding and Colorado School of Mines
The new fund will be used to acquire and develop new technology and equipment that will address the needs veterans with limited mobility. Some of the newly designed equipment includes a new wheelchair that allows people to more easily traverse curbs and bumps in the city. Additionally, Mines students have also designed a wagon-style system that would assist people in their adaptive sports, independently or without any additional help. The Mines students also developed a small trailer that can help people in moving their hiking equipment to the mountains.
In addition to new equipment, the new funding will also provide the School of Mines with financial resources to acquire new equipment such as 3D technology. This new technology will provide Mines students and researchers the ability to better analyze the body types of the veterans, allowing them to create assistive devices that suit each individual needs.
Overall, the new partnership is expected to help injured veterans become more independent, and, more importantly, improve their quality of life.
Quality of Life Plus (QL+) was established to aid innovations that address and improve the quality of life for those injured military veterans. This non-profit organization connects injured veterans and first respondents with some of America's leading University Engineering Programs, which includes Colorado School of Mines and many more.
