DC Taxis to go Wheelchair Friendly

Travelling with disabilities or on wheelchair can now be hassle-free as DC taxis are about to go wheelchair friendly. People who are physically limited can now go to places without the difficulty of finding cabs and taxis that are equipped to transport wheelchairs. The Taxi Service Commission is responsible for the provision of transport services to every member of the community. This responsibility includes accessibility of transportation even to individuals with physical limitation.

According to reports, more taxis and cabs will be designed and built with wheelchair supports to ensure that even folks with physical limitations can have a convenient and comfortable travel. More taxis with full wheelchair support will be seen on the streets of DC by October 1, 2014. This is great news to customers with physical impairment because these wheelchair accessible taxicabs will allow people who are using wheelchairs to travel and go to distant places in their wheelchair provided that they and the equipment can be safely and securely restrained in the taxicab.

The initiative of having wheelchair friendly taxis has already been approved just recently by the DC Taxicab Commission. This is to show effort in improving customer service. The Commission is planning to have 65 taxis with full wheelchair support this year. According to the Taxicab Commission, if success is seen in this initiative, the number of taxis with wheelchair support will definitely double by the second year of its release.

To ensure safety, there are factors that must be considered about the wheelchair friendly taxi.

  • The passenger occupying or using a wheelchair in the taxi must be ensured that the equipment is securely restrained. This is done by applying restraints to the floor from two points on the rear or back of the wheelchair frame as well as two points on the front of the equipment.
  • The passenger should be secured by a seatbelt that can be properly adjusted and fastened to accommodate the individual wearing it.
  • Drivers of the taxis with wheelchair support must be able to comply with the requirements needed and follow the policies accordingly so that safety and security of the passenger is ensured.

These taxis will soon be available and will be rendering services to individuals on wheelchairs. The idea of producing wheelchair friendly taxicabs is one great way of helping people with disabilities live a life with more comfort and convenience.
