Edinburgh Airport Improves Travel Experience for People With Disabilities

Scotland's Edinburgh Airport has signed a partnership with the Scotland-based healthcare startup Staels Design. The Scottish airport has finally acquired the iconic WheelAir cooling backrest cushion, following the product’s successful trial last summer. The acquisition marked a huge leap in Scotland’s disabilities and travel accessibility program.

As part of the airport’s ongoing accessibility effort, Edinburgh Airport also announced a partnership with OmniServ, a leading global provider of facilities management and airport assistance. The two will work together to improve the travel experience for passengers requiring special assistance at the airport. However, the full details of the OmniServ deal were not disclosed to the public.

This is not the first time OmniServ has signed a partnership with one of the country’s busiest airports. Last March, it signed a deal with London’s Heathrow airport to find out whether the airport can improve the travel experience of people with mobility issues. That partnership also involved the trial of the high-tech WHILL C wheelchair, a life-changing assistive personal mobility technology that integrates IoT technology to deliver premium personal care for people with disabilities. The wheelchair trial was introduced to Heathrow as part of the airport’s continued efforts to improve the travel experience of people with reduced mobility.

In addition to Heathrow deal, OmniServ also teamed up with a British company to introduce the ProMove Sling, a British-developed technology for lifting and transferring PRMs in UK airport.

What to expect from the WheelAir cooling backrest cushion

Developed by Scotland-based firm Staels Design, the WheelAir provides back support through a unique blend of carefully designed foams. The cooling backrest cushion has been carefully designed with input from Paralympic athletes as well as various wheelchair makers. The product features an inbuilt fan technology to cool a user’s back by taking away heat, providing extra comfort for wheelchair users.

The WheelAir has already received positive feedback from the airport passengers when it took its first trial last summer. Many passengers claimed that the new product has the potential to improve the travel experience for passengers with disabilities. According to airport service provider OmniServ, the feedback from the recent WheelAir trial has exceeded expectations.
