Exotic, Accessible Puerto Rico

My husband and I had the privilege of renting a condo in Playa Buye, Puerto Rico for two months last winter.  The beach was beautiful with the added bonus of trees, eliminating the need for beach umbrellas.  The beach here is nestled in a bay so the waves are constant but mild.  The pig roast in the mountains was so much fun that it was repeated several times.  Lowered curbs everywhere made tourist attractions and town park craft fairs accessible.  (The homemade dolls we bought for our Granddaughters for $10. were a huge hit.) We found the Puerto Rican food to be delicious and we enjoyed the abundance of food choices in the restaurants.  Shopping in the supermarkets provided an abundance of food choices so that I could prepare any of my recipes as easily as I could back home.

The most amazing attraction to Puerto Rico for us was the people.  We made delightful friends whom we cherish.  They explained to us that on their island disabled people and pregnant women are always given precedence.  We were ready to leave one restaurant that didn't have a ramp when four waiters appeared to carry me and my wheelchair up the 20 steps to the entrance!  Everyone was always willing to help and were even patient and encouraging with my rusty Spanish.  One family we met invited us to their home and prepared a typical Christmas Day feast for us.  We found the Puerto Rican people to be very outgoing and full of fun.

For anyone who loves the beach, I would highly recommend the JOB (joy on the beach) beach wheelchair. You can learn more about it at It moves easily through the sand or in the water and comes with an extension which converts it to a lounge chair for fun in the sun.  The airlines will transport this or any wheelchair for free.

Happy travels to Puerto Rico everyone!
