An accommodation facility for people with disabilities is being constructed in Gurnee, Illinois. It is expected to be ready for occupation by the first week of March. This project is being completed courtesy of Stonebridge of Gurnee, at 5980 W. Washington. According to Laura Kelly, the Executive Director of the sponsoring facility, the building will include enough adapted apartment units to accommodate 120 adults with limited mobility. They are primarily targeting the adults in the age bracket of 22 to 64 years old, sometimes drawn from nursing homes that were intended for older people.
The project is bringing a lot of anticipation and excitement among the potential staff and residents. Kelly has indicated that the practice of sharing rooms will become a thing of the past as soon as the building is completed. “Now they can have the grace of living in their own apartment,” she was quoted as saying. Considering the number of calls and the number of applications Kelly has received, it is clear that people are looking forward to the completion of this project.
This will be one of the few facilities of its kind in the entire state of Illinois. It will have a studio and one bedroom amenities. Nurses will also be on hand to offer medication management, housekeeping, and other essential services. Kelly believes that Stonebridge will enable the residents to live a dignified life that they so much deserve.
Those who qualify for this accommodation facility must be within the targeted age bracket, be physically disabled, already receiving social security disability income, and either on Medicaid or are qualified for the same.
The idea to do this project at Gurnee Village was first mooted in 2015. Groundbreaking was done on a 6.5-acre plot in 2016; the construction work proceeded throughout 2017. Construction work on the exterior and landscaping is complete. The contractors are currently doing interior work and furniture installation.
The Executive Director has expressed pride in the progress made in the project despite the unfavorable cold weather.
