Kolkatta Airport to Make Dedicated Entry Gates for Fliers with Limited Mobility

Kolkatta (formerly known as Calcutta) airport is looking forward to making the airport more accessible for fliers with disabilities and those with limited mobility. The authorities are planning to set up specialized terminal entry gates, baggage and security check-in counters in an effort to improve their traveling experience.

According to officials, the passengers will only have to travel a short distance as the aisle starting from the entrance to the terminal and ending at the boarding area will be delineated.

Both sections of the terminal (including the domestic, and the international) will be reserved for fliers using wheelchairs or with restricted mobility.

The closest check-in island to the gate in the aforesaid sections will have a counter, wherein boarding passes of all airlines will be issued to the passengers. After collecting their boarding passes, fliers can head straight to the nearest security check-in counter.

On Friday, August 30th, airport director Kaushik Bhattacharya noted that they are trying to bring this plan to fruition in just eight months. Speaking about the counters where boarding passes for all airlines will be issued, Mr. Bhattacharya emphasized that the airlines need to make a roster for this. "The counters will have a common user facility," he added.

There are lacks of facilities at the Kolkatta airport for the fliers with restricted mobility.

Calcutta airport fails to provide some basic facilities to fliers who use a wheelchair or are unable to move independently. Those who need wheelchair usually end up waiting in front of the terminal building for quite some time even after getting off their cars. The concerned airline normally takes a long time to send in a wheelchair for them.

Phones placed at the departure area display a list of numbers of the airline help desks. Regrettably, calls to most of these numbers go answered, according to passengers.

The airport also needs to increase the number of facilitation counters, aside from adding signages for those using wheelchairs.

An airport official confirmed that a counter will be made available to fliers with restricted mobility at each of the two entry gates.

Keeping the convenience of passengers with limited mobility in mind, the counters will be placed at a lower height. Moreover, their check-in counters will be at a lower level as well, the official said.

The airport has also thought about the visually impaired fliers and has provided them Braille signage.

Much to the relief of visually impaired passengers, the airport is also planning to have Braille signages. This will allow them to enter the terminal and board their flights without requiring a lot of assistance, the official noted.
