Meet Sohail, Man U’s New Coach

He was born with legs not able to walk. He lived his life on wheelchair. But today, he is Manchester United’s new coach. Meet Sohail.

Sohail Rehman was born with spinal muscular atrophy, a condition wherein there is a genetic defect in the motor neuron causing general muscle wasting and impairment in mobility. Because of this condition, Sohail struggled to walk when he was young. And by 13 years of age, his condition worsened rendering him unable to walk, causing him to live his life on a wheelchair.

Hailing from Keighley, Yorkshire, Sohail, 21, is a very passionate football fan and player. Despite his condition, he is very determined and motivated to keep up with the game.

Sohail studied sports technology and took a sports development course in college. And during his free time, he stayed pitch side at his school’s football games and also at Old Trafford along with Manchester United’s disabled supporters association.

Sohail could not play the game but because he loves football so much, he began training and coaching. His career in the football field then started. He coached Sunday league teams and tournaments in Yorkshire. He even earned a number of FA (Football Association) badges because of his witty and ingenious coaching skills and analysis.

To him, the chance of playing the game has been taken away so instead he shared his vast knowledge of the sport. And this is something that he loves doing because he could still be in the game that he adores so much.

His motivation and determination boosted even more when Sir Alex Ferguson, a former football player and manager, wrote to encourage and inspire him. In the letter were also praises, admiration and appreciation of Sohail’s efforts, fearlessness and passion about the sport.

Sohail is even more inspired to persevere and aim high. And his ambition for his coaching career was brought to greater heights when he said that he wanted to coach for the Manchester United.

This ambition and goal, today, has become a reality. Sohail has just been recently signed up by Man U to work specifically with the club’s academy. He has become a coach of elite footballers. And he is said to be the first football coach on a wheelchair.

Sohail’s dream was realized because he refused to give up and abandon football even if he is on a wheelchair. He is now using his skills and knowledge to help find the next football superstar.
