Listed among the world’s top 10 extraordinary people with disabilities, Sudha Chandran is an example of one such courageous lady who became India's favorite disabled dancer.
The McMillan Publishing has also mentioned a chapter on her in one of their published books “Knock out Challenges”. Not only that, Sudha has got her mention in various study books in schools across the country. She had been the most extraordinary human being who had not just overcome her disability but also became a star in the entertainment industry of India.
Once when someone asked her about her disability she quoted that, it is a blessing for her and is the reason behind whatever she has achieved in life. If that would not have happened she would never have gathered the courage to be at the level where she is today. Sudha has also been given the title of ‘Dancing Peacock’ based on her first movie Mayuri (Peacock).
Sudha was born in a family of artists, her father was musician and a well-known face in the movie industry of India. Sudha started dancing at the age of four and later on took it as a profession after doing a course on classical dancing.
The Hard time
In May 1981, near Trichy in South India, Sudha lost her right leg in an accident. Due to the negligence at the hospital she lost her leg and her dreams of achieving something uncommon. She was just 17 years old at the time and lost all her hope of being a dancer.
Post-accident she was broken and her family was very disturbed. She then decided not to go to Mumbai and rather she went to Jaipur to get a vulcanized rubber foot designed by Dr P K Sethi. This was the point from where her life took a turn and she was back on track. From there she never looked back and did vigorous practice. She again returned to the stage and performed with more enthusiasm and passion.
Sudha went through a lot of pain while practicing, but with the commitment towards dance she went on performing and today she is one of the most loved Indian Celebrities with several movies, TV serials, reality shows and thousands of dance concerts completed successfully.
Husband – The pillar of support On the sets of a movie ‘Seeta Salma Suzie’ Sudha met her soul mate, Ravi Dang, an assistant director of the movie. With his love and support Sudha got more strength through her work. Today Ravi manages her dance academy where she teaches dance students one in every week.
Sudha always took things positively and she went on the record to say that the accident was not a loss to her, rather she gained a lot out of it. She learned that life isn’t about stopping at a point and regretting the things that happen to you, rather take it as an opportunity and proceed. She is a real heroine for all Indians.
