Microsoft Xbox Gets Another Huge Disability-Focused Addition

Microsoft has first expanded the usability of the Xbox console for gamers with the release of the Xbox Adaptive Controller, a customizable gaming option for gamers with disabilities. The innovative Xbox Adaptive Controller features two large programmable buttons and a range of joysticks and switches, which make it much easier for people to play video games on the Xbox gaming console and Windows 10-powered computers. This year, the gaming console has received another big addition, focusing more on gamers with disabilities.

According to reports, the latest addition will let gamers with disabilities turn their power wheelchair into console game controllers. The new third-party add-on was first proposed by AbleGamers COO Steve Spohn. The charity organization has teamed up with assistive technology specialist ATMakers to develop the Xbox adapter and bring it into the gaming world.

The Freedom Wing Adapter, which currently available for free from charity organization AbleGamers, will connect the Microsoft Xbox Adaptive Controller to the power wheelchair through a 9-pin port, completely turning a joystick that controls a power wheelchair into Xbox One gaming controller.

The newly-released Xbox adapter is currently being giving out by AbleGamers through a grant program, and gamers with disabilities can apply for a grant on the official AbleGamers website. Production has already started, with distribution said to be on the planning stage. In addition to the development of the new Xbox adapter, the AbelGamers is also working with ATMakers to develop and publish step-by-step instructions for DIYs (do-it-yourselfers) as well as the design on various engineering websites. The goal is to help anyone build their own gaming adapter, using the DIY instructions. A newly uploaded Youtube video below shows how to build a customize Xbox adapter.

Last month, Rory Steel, the head of Digital Jersey Academy, has created a custom Xbox gaming controller to help his daughter with a disability perform basic functions on a typical gaming controller, like playing games on Nintendo Switch console.

First introduced to the gaming world in 2018, the Microsoft Xbox Adaptive Controller was specifically designed to act as a control hub for all the devices attached to it. This game-changing device also allows Xbox users to remap various gaming functions.
