Peppa Pig Introduces Mandy Mouse, a New Character That Uses a Wheelchair

Peppa Pig is a show that you can't hate. The popular kid's show that features all sorts of animals including ponies, elephants, and pigs have touched the hearts of countless children around the world.

And now, they're introducing a new character that uses a wheelchair and her name is Mandy Mouse.

Mandy made her debut in the last week on the official Peppa Pig Twitter feed. The tweet featured a caption "Squeak! Giving the playgroup a brief glimpse of the newest member of their beloved show."

The tweet also included a video, wherein Madam Gazelle introduces Mandy to the zealous playgroup by saying, "Children, today we have a visitor... Mandy Mouse."

Accompanied by her mother, Mandy makes an entrance into the room and greets the playgroup by saying, "Hello everyone, squeak." The class says hello in a big chorus.

The modesty of this introduction grabbed the attention of Jo Chopra McGowan, Co-founder, Latika Roy Foundation. The foundation is based in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, and untiringly supports families and children with disabilities, while giving them other specialized services as well.

According to McGowan, the fact that they didn't build too much drama surrounding Mandy's entrance, reflected how children with disabilities should actually be treated.

"They are already there and they don’t have to be introduced”, says McGowan.

Many parents have shared the 15-seconds long clip, expressing how Mandy has touched their lives in the comments sections.

A 29-year-old wheelchair user, who shared his thoughts in the comments section said he will now be watching Peppa Pig zealously. Another parent whose daughter has neuromuscular disorder deemed the show as a "game changer."

Rati Misra, Advisor at the National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People (NCPEDP), noted that her nephew loves the show and that by introducing a character that uses a wheelchair, it helps make disabilities seem normal.
