Robots and artificial intelligence(AI) for people with disabilities

In the developing information technology world, the gap between people with disabilities and the world and the community seems to be narrowing. The blind and hearing-impaired can feel the colorful world around them, or the disabled can walk normally with the help of machines and technology.

Today, blind people can "read" newspapers thanks to a pair of glasses with artificial intelligence (AI) technology; People with bipedal paralysis who can walk upstairs with their legs ... are not images in fiction but the reality in Israel.

On April 29, the 6th International Access Israel Conference took place at Avenue Convention Center - Airport City, Tel Aviv (Israel) with the theme "Innovation and future of success." near ”. Notably, the conference attracted the participation of many CEOs of famous corporations in the world such as IKEA, Cisco, GetTaxi, Digital Israel ... The presentations at the conference focused on the accessibility of people with disabilities. in the future thanks to the application of science and technology, artificial intelligence, smart cities, the role of communication to the revolution on the accessibility of people with disabilities ... That shows that this country has had there must be a high-tech industry exclusively for people with disabilities, enabling them to operate in a completely independent and comfortable way in society.

Not supporting people with disabilities is against the law

Policies to ensure equal social access for people with disabilities have been introduced into law by Israel since the 1970s. Accordingly, the requirements for facilities and facilities to support them in public transport, administrative buildings and common spaces such as parks, beaches ... are clearly defined in the laws.

Legalizing the rules to support people with disabilities is not new to many countries, but the culture of complying with them is Israel's difference. Ms. Michal Rimol - CEO of Access Israel, the largest non-profit organization in the country with the mission of promoting accessibility and improving the lives of people with disabilities - analyzed: “The implementation of regulations supporting people with disabilities Disability is the task of government agencies such as the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Social Equality, of local governments and most importantly of the people themselves. This has made the lives of people with disabilities more concerned and improved. ”

Strict and detailed regulations in the law plus the policy to support universities and businesses to research technology products for people with disabilities is the foundation to promote the formation of a technology ecosystem exclusively for the ministry. of this population in Israel.

Technology for people with disabilities

Located in the tree-lined precinct of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, the Technion Institute of Technology is a special laboratory where a series of detailed descriptions of inventions and machines for robotics technology research for the disabled disability.

Professor Reuven Katz - Director of the JWUllmann Robot Research Center, in charge of the lab - said: “Besides designing machines and automated production systems, we also develop robot technologies to improve the lives of people with disabilities and the elderly, and at the same time study artificial intelligence systems for rehabilitation facilities ”.

 Orcam My Eye 2

One of the most impressive devices for the blind is the size of a fingertip, mounted on a frame connected to a Bluetooth headset. This sophisticated device called Orcam My Eye 2 is specialized for reading books, recognizing faces, even recognizing the value of money and some other common items.

It has the ability to read magazines in English, French fluently and the ability to read denominations of currencies with 100% accuracy of this malicious device. The device can read 20 different languages. It is known that inside this tiny device, in addition to a high-definition smart camera, its brain is a handwriting recognition chip and converts it into a voice. In addition to reading handwriting, this device also recognizes male or female faces, even they can "learn" and then identify familiar people.

Orcam's representative said the 22-gram device uses advanced technologies such as AI (artificial intelligence), OCR (optical character recognition) and machine learning, can read the printed text and digitized form, recognize millions of different gadgets and human faces in real-time.

One of the salient products that the lab is working on is a robot-assisted remote assistance system with a control center that connects to robots located at the home of people with disabilities through audio and video. The facility also launched simpler technology-integrated products, such as the Agile Walker walking assist vehicle, the automatic braking system mounted on the wheelchairs, preventing free-flowing backward.

In addition, robot technology has also been applied by the company to develop a travel assistance system for bipedal people. Sixth-generation ReWalk products allow them to stand up, sit down, walk or climb stairs easily without a wheelchair or the assistance of others. ReWalk company is also a well-known health technology company in the world, specializing in providing rehabilitation products and services to major foreign partners such as the US Department of Veterans Affairs.

Furthermore, Israeli companies also launched products for people with disabilities using IoT technologies such as Step Hear, Right Hear, AbiliSense, Mopius, Milbat ... with smartphone design for people. visually impaired, a one-click automatic door open system on a wheelchair-accessible phone ...

Representatives of a series of technology giants such as Microsoft, Facebook, and Intel, which have research and development centers in Israel, also announced their active participation in the country's efforts to remove all barriers. for disabled people to integrate into society through high technology.

The above is just one of many high-tech solutions developed and researched for people with disabilities. With the Industrial Revolution 4.0, more and more technology giants such as Microsoft, Facebook, and Intel have also announced their active participation in efforts to remove all barriers for people with disabilities to integrate society. Hopefully, in the near future, thanks to the application of science and the latest technology trends, the story of employment, social connection as well as full participation in modern life for people with disabilities will be more practical and clear.
