Smart Wheelchair and Mobile Application Make a Big Name in the Mobile Technology Competition

It’s the buzz of the mobile technology world. The Malaysian-based PROJEX 15 has just selected a smart wheelchair and mobile ordering application as one of the winning innovators during this year’s Kota Kinabalu Polytechnic innovation competition.

According to The Borneo Post, the bi-annual technology-focused competition saw 250 students vying for the top spot with their own tech innovations. The winning team has also been selected in an unprecedented Poster Competition as part of the bi-annual Kota Kinabalu Polytechnic innovation competition PROJEX 15.

One the top winners for this year's competition is a smart wheelchair and mobile application for placing sustenance requests. The mobile app will allow users with mobility issues to place their food orders through the smartphone application and then receive a notification once their order is complete.

About the Smart Wheelchair and Mobile App

It's no doubt, the smartphone has made a hugely significant contribution to our society, especially in the field of communication and entertainment. Today, there are a great number of new products that are being linked to the smartphone and its offer various services. One of these is the newly launched handicapped assistive technology, which they called the smart wheelchair and mobile application.

Designed for wheelchair-bound individuals, team members Nina Nathrah, Dyg Nuriffa Hanina and Fenisia Kenai have decided to equip a regular wheelchair with the Arduino Uno hardware, which allows the team to control the wheelchair using only a smartphone with Bluetooth connection. The team has explained that the Arduino Uno hardware is associated with the smartphone, which allows it to send summons to the hand-off and then make the wheelchair moving. The smart wheelchair has been equipped with sophisticated sensors which can detect obstacles and avoid a collision.

The team also explained that they have decided to pursue the idea of smart wheelchair mobile application because the smart wheelchair is not yet available in the market and electric wheelchair is very expensive.

In addition to the smart wheelchair application, the team also plans to bring their own mobile application to food delivery. The team hopes in the future that they will be able to increase efficiency in placing orders, especially for food trucks.

Finally, winners of the bi-annual Kota Kinabalu competition will also get the chance to compete in inter-polytechnic competitions, where selected products or inventions will be registered under the Patent Utility Innovation and the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia.
