Start Afresh and Let the Past Go

With as much as I have known about disabilities, and the more and more I read about people facing disability-related challenges, I am now even more convinced about how the state of our mind affects our lives. Pick up any success story. The crux is the decision to not give up, to look at the brighter side of things, and to make the most of whatever you have.

Sounds easier to say than do? It definitely is. But then, there are no options. Most people who are facing a disability, have either survived an accident or have it by birth. In either case, it is hard to live with. It can continue to hurt you for the rest of your life if you don't know how to handle it.

I have been through the phase where the mind keeps asking God "Why me?"

But God answers only in the form of future blessings. While stumbling through the challenges of my life, I have realized that God is not fair. But I have no complaints, because he is kind. He does not give everything equally to everyone ,but he does give everyone something special.

We all have a tendency to pity ourselves, and feel that the world owes us more. It is quite natural and it comes up as a strong emotion when something unexpected happens in our life. The best way to get through the mental stress is to let it go. If it is a matter of the past (even though it has affected your life entirely), you have to get over it.

There are many beautiful techniques I have learned to get over strong emotions and feel light. You can use them too. Once the past is gone, you can look at the bright light today and focus on what you have got, rather than what you lost. Once that transformation happens, life becomes easy.

Most of you will agree that more than the physical challenge, it is the mind that is stopping you from leading the life you want. The biggest strength that any human has is not in his body, but in his mind. All of these testimonies of successful people clearly illustrate this point.

Let us resolve today to have a thankful heart irrespective of what challenges we face in life.

"Why me?" has always been my question to God, for so many things. I really wonder about the pain of people who become physically helpless. Anywayz, one should always go ahead with life rather than giving up. Nice blog, Akanksha....voted! :)

Akanksha, I love this blog. Why is it, that as soon as I have read this, that I am slowly, feeling the tears beginning to trickle down my face as I am typing this response. Why? Because, it's hitting home like a bomb shell going off in my very own head. That's why.....Definitely, will vote for you.

Voted. I love your blog. I use to ask God, why me over many different things, & quite honestly, it wasn't for me to know. I was just suppose to trust Him & allow Him to lead the way. He has never failed me. He always loves me & blesses me beyond measure. You are so right about the mind. It is the strongest part of the body. It can make you or break you. Please check out my blog: Finding The Middle & vote if you like it. Thank you.

Thanks for the comment Rene..You are absolutely right about the mind. In fact, it is the mind that distinguishes humans from other animals. I will definitely check out your blog.

Sadly the mind doesn't always distinguish humans from animals in a good way. Only humans are capable of great evils such as nuclear weapons, etc :-(

Voted. Great blog Akanksha, very inspiring, and you are so right about this "mind over matter" business! I have discovered that myself. I have so often asked myself that as well, "Why me?", from early childhood onwards, but you might as well say "Why anyone?" As you say, it is what you make of your life and the hand you are dealt that makes all the difference. Please check out my latest blog here too, Money Talks If You Are Blind! I think you might be interested in that.

Good article Akanksha. Although it would be great if you could elaborate on the techniques through which one can learn to let go of the past.

Al, I will agree. One does need to learn the techniques of learning to let go of the past. I for one, would love to have them. I am in need of learning to let go of the past in so many areas of my own life that it would be a big help; for me to know them.

I would love to share that Teresa, but probably it would be irrelevant over here. Will let you guys know when and where I share it.

Yes, it is true that one can fall in the victimisation stage very easily. Depression is often a way of life for those with disabilities, and although I have seen quite a few Deaf people go through this, thank goodness most work at trying to get involved in life one way or another. Voted, even though I know I am late! When you have the chance, my new piece is The Roots of Sign Languages.
