The AKWRF Launches a Campaign to Make Tourist Locations Wheelchair-Friendly in Kerala

On 16 October 2019, a campaign was started by the All Kerala Wheelchair Rights Federation, the goal is to make all tourist locations in Kerala accessible for wheelchair users.

They had started with some famous places like Athirapally, Vazhachal, and Thumboormozhi, they were accompanied by the officials' members of AKWRF, together they visited all the three places to see how they can make these tourist places accessible and wheelchair-friendly.

The AKWRF major work is to make Kerala accessible for wheelchair users, from so many years they have been working on many activities to complete their mission.

According to the AKWRF members, their main support system was the local forest officials by making the movements in speed and keep an eye that what all the important steps are been taken.

The AKWRF officials and the members together went to all the famous tourist places in their wheelchairs.

The AKWRK, Secretary Rajeev Palluruthy, hopes that the officials will make rules and put them to practice immediately.

In the coming days, we are going to focus on tourist locations at each district of Kerala and will give petitions to concerned authorities. When we visited these places we realized that there are no pathways for wheelchair users to get there. We also want a wheelchair at the main entrance so that if someone comes without their wheelchairs, they can still enter. There must also be accessible restrooms and wheelchair ramps. These are our basic rights that the government must ensure-Rajeev Palluruthy, Secretary, AKWRF.

With the officials, other members of the AKWRF team were also present to start the campaign including Vasunni Pattazhi, Zakeer Hussain, Badarusaman, and Riyas.

Kavitha Keshavan, who is the Secretary of Thrissur wing said, "We visited three locations and have informed officials of what we need. A wheelchair user must be able to witness the beauty of the place without any hassles. Currently, due to inaccessibility, we are unable to fully enjoy it."

Recently, there have been a lot of issues of people with disabilities not enjoying themselves at tourist places due to inaccessibility. Since the holidays are around the corner, AKWRF officials have teamed up to make these tourist destinations accessible and wheelchair-friendly.
