Michael J. Fox is back on TV with his new TV comedy series The Michael J. Fox Show. The TV sitcom premiered back in September and is the first time Michael J. Fox has been back on television since his last series Spin City. Michael is known for his humor and career in TV and movies (Back to the Future; Family Ties), but what makes The Michael J. Fox Show so different is the comedy is based on his real-life experience living with Parkinson’s disease.
Normally one would think living with Parkinson’s (or any chronic disease) would be no laughing matter, but Michael J. Fox has spun his disability into not only an opportunity for awareness by reaching a worldwide television audience but has created a thirty minute weekly entertainment show to showcase that sometimes you just have to laugh at your disability.
The Michel J. Fox Show’s Facebook page describes the premise behind the sitcom airing at 9:30/8:30 central on Thursdays.
After taking several years off to focus on other things including his charity, it should come as no surprise that Michael J. Fox wanted to put a spin on his new show to raise awareness. He has been an active advocate for Parkinson’s and the disability community ever since his diagnosis.
His foundation is dedicated to finding a cure for Parkinson’s disease through an aggressively funded research agenda and to ensuring the development of improved therapies for those living with Parkinson's today and has funded over $400 million in research.
While his new show received mixed reviews, Michael J. Fox explained in an interview with the NY Daily News that other people may "feel sorry" for him. but he doesn’t feel bad for himself. "I’m Okay!...They'll realize that this is just my life, the stuff I was given to deal with.”

Despite the mixed reviews, almost everyone can agree that the benefit of spreading awareness and putting more images of disability out into the mainstream media is perhaps the most important message that the Michael J. Fox Show is spreading. He reminds us of the power of positivity and keeping a smile even in the face of diversity.
