Are you ready for an extra-great competition? Have you been working out and training lately? Are you a major athlete who loves competing and playing? Do you adore sports and even consider them your religion?
Gather around for the news: the next Paralympics are in September 2016! That’s right, the 2016 Summer Paralympics will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from September 7th to September 18th, 2016. Even though that may seem far off, it only leaves approximately one year and a half to train and get fit. Therefore, now is as good a time as there is to get started!
These games will be a first for many reasons. It is the very first time that a Latin-American country hosts these games. It is also the first time that the hosting country receives them during its winter season, but due to the weather during that time, it will not be a problem. And, it is the first time that a Portuguese-speaking country will host these games. Furthermore, two new sports will be added to the games: canoeing and paratriathlon. It is therefore an event not to miss!
The first Paralympic Games were held in Rome, Italy in 1960. Of course, this came about because of the desire for athletes with a handicap or disability to take part in this type of sports competition. But seeing the large differences between athletes, there had to be a change made. Therefore, the Paralympics were created. It is interesting to note as well that people with deafness have their own Olympics specific to their own needs.
Another notable fact is that the games originally started due to the many injured war veterans who wanted to participate in sports even if they had been permanently disabled. They wanted to compete, so they built their own Olympics.
