A couple of weeks ago, I told you about a wheelchair-accessible park in Iowa. My plan, as I stated, is to make it a series. Our next park, established in 1961, is located in Cass County, Iowa south of Anita, Iowa on Iowa State Highway 148, one hour southwest of Des Moines, Iowa. Lake Anita State Park is made up of prairie, a lake, a campground, picnic shelters, and 4 miles of paved trails and a nature trail.
The beach at Lake Anita offers activities for all ages and includes a sand volleyball court. Other activities offered by the lake are fishing, boating, and swimming. The Friends of Lake Anita group has concessions open Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend and is open on Saturdays, 8:00 - 11:00 PM at the popcorn shed. Souvenirs such as t-shirts, key chain flashlights, coolies, glow in the dark items and cup-holders available for sale during movie nights at the lake.
Camping at the lake includes electric and is $16 a night during Peak Season (May 15th-Sept. 30th). The park also offers cabins that cost $60 per day for youth groups with a $60 deposit and $15 per day for other groups with a $45 deposit. There is also a dining hall that cost about $30 per day. The full rates PDF can be seen on the Iowa DNR website.
Lake Anita State Park has a 4.5-star rating with 269 google reviews. Reviews praise the parks heavenly views, campground, and fishing, as the Iowa DNR has stated, "The fishing is excellent!" Some have said the park has clean, well kept, and quiet. Some reviews even draw attention to the bathrooms saying they are big and showers are hot! If you plan on wildlife watching, many reviewers have said they see many deer as well as ducks and other wildlife. One reviewer said, "I have been here before. Today I was here for the DNR Volunteer Day. The staff is absolutely fantastic, people. The grounds are well kept. Shower house and restrooms are clean. I camped in the primitive area. Fire rings and picnic tables are in good shape. It was a beautiful night."
Wow! As a wildlife and nature photographer, I would go just for the wildlife! I might actually be heading out the door right now! See you there!
