In UAE, Ajman University introduces a new project that will develop a basketball wheelchair in the entire country. This is a great initiative taken by the administrations to promote and encourage the people who are differently-abled to take sports as a career option. The United Arab Emirates is all set to host this Wheelchair basketball world Championships in Dubai in the year 2022 which will act as a first step towards making it official.
The International Wheelchair Basketball Federation secretary, Norbert Kucera has already met Charlie Bethel who is the chairman of the Competition Commission in IWBF and the university itself. They both watched a match which was held between regular players and differently-abled players for demonstration inclusion for a short period.
The UAE National Paralympic Committee's president, Mohamed Alhameli says that wheelchair basketball should be used as a "driver" that will help to promote the Paralympic sports across the country. The university chancellor, Dr. Karim Seghir presented Bethel and Kucera with a plaque that marked the occasion.
While the city in Canada, Ottawa was also in the race to host the Wheelchair Basketball World Championships in 2022 event but IWBF mentioned how the city of UAE, Dubai presented an emotional and a very strong bid to the council.
Ulf Mehrens, the IWBF President said, "Hosting the World Championships in West Asia will be a milestone for our sport and is extremely important for the Asia Oceania Zone to continue its growth. We have full confidence that Dubai will exceed our expectations and create a great event and a celebration of Paralympic sport.
It was an extremely difficult decision for the IWBF Executive Council to make with Canada and the UAE both presenting very thorough and exciting host options, and I’d like pass on my sincere thanks to both of them for their hard work and effort that went into the proposals."
