Wheelchair Users Receive a Great New App

With today’s technology, it’s not surprising to see a lot of devices and apps introduced and released in the market. But what’s amazing about this particular new device along with an incredible app is that it’s made especially for wheelchair users.

Tyler Hively, Chaotic Moon Studios’ smart content analyst, said that with what today’s technology can offer and do, anything is possible. A wheelchair user himself, Tyler knew however that there are still specific differences for apps and devices when it’s about wheelchair users.

Tyler, aware of Chaotic Moon’s activity tracker project, suggested making a tracker and considering a number of factors related to people using wheelchairs. His suggestion was brought to the studio’s BASE Team, the in-house development and research hub of the company.

Just two weeks after, BASE came back to Tyler with a prototype and a certain app. So the team created a device that can be attached to the mobility device without interfering with the wheelchair’s functions as well as the movements of the users.

The device, mainly an activity tracker, is capable of collecting several types of information, which includes decline, incline, speed, and acceleration. The data collected is then transferred through Bluetooth, a wireless connection used to exchange info or data over short distances, to the user’s mobile app or smartwatch. This can then be used for fitness purposes. They call the device as Freewheel, which is considered as the world’s first ever fitness tracker for differently-abled individuals.

Ben Lamm, Chaotic Moon Studios’ CEO, said that technology is not only for business people and for solving their problems. It can also be used to create a way to solve personal issues and problems. It can also be used to help wheelchair users. Ben then emphasized that the company is excited for Freewheel, not because of its highly advanced technological features, but because of its capacity to make an impact and somehow change the lives of the disabled community.

As of today, the developers of Freewheel are working on the prototype. They are making use of the Tyler’s feedback in order to improve and even add more features to the device. Though it’s still not complete, there are already a lot of wheelchair users wanting to try Freewheel.

Chaotic Moon Studios, founded in 2010, is an American mobile software design and development studio. This creative technology studio is based in Austin, Texas.
